The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), formerly known as the Department of Metallurgical and Engineering, is an international research-active and training unit within the University with facilities and manpower covering the broad spectrum of materials science and engineering that includes cutting-edge and fundamentals of materials design and processes for engineering applications.

Over the years, the Department has played a leading role in training and research focused on ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, with the attendant beneficiation process, to support the then newly planned and established integrated iron and steel industries in Ajaokuta and Delta; the Aluminum Smelting Company in Ikot Abasi as well as the Amalgamated Tine Mines in Jos, all in Nigeria.

Materials Science and Engineering has come a long way in the last three hundred years or so with various exciting developments that led to decline in metal’s dominance in Engineering Materials. This led to a proposal by the Department in 1997 for a change of name of the Department from Metallurgical and Materials Engineering to Materials Science and Engineering. This was finally approved by the University Senate to take effect from 2003. The degrees offered since 2003/2004 academic session have been in Materials Engineering

Vision and Mission of the Department

The vision of the Department is to develop highly skilled professionals for the public, private and international organizations, as well as for teaching and research in Tertiary Institutions and for global competitiveness, while exploiting the in-depth knowledge of materials behavior to develop new and innovative materials with excellent physico-mechanical properties that underpin the development and progress across a wide variety of sectors such as transportation, civil, aviation, electrical-electronics, chemical, environmental and health sciences.

Some of the objectives of the Department are to:

(i)        provide the necessary high-level manpower for the nations engineering materials industries and Oil & Gas industry that are rapidly developing and expanding.

(ii)       produce Materials Engineers who are innovative and capable of effecting changes in imported technology to meet local needs through research and development.

(iii)      train and re-train materials professionals through collaborations with relevant industries by designing courses for Certificate, Diploma and Professional programmes; and

(iv)      offer solutions to materials engineering related problems and challenges in industries and offer innovative ideas.
